British Numismatic Journal - An Authority On Rare Coins

British Numismatic Journal

Coin collectors are usually very passionate about their hobby. Many can pontificate for hours on their gem quality $20 golden double eagle they got for a song at their favorite rare coin establishment. These collectors are often members of societies that produce catalogs, journals and books for other collectors. For example, the British Numismatic Society produces the British Numismatic Journal.

The British Numismatic Journal was first published in 1903 by the members of the British Numismatic Society. The journal was meant to education each member on what the other members were doing. Because coin collecting and numismatics were not widely recognized outside of the very wealthy, the publication of the first British Numismatic Journal was very small and did not have a great deal of information.

However, as the years have passed and membership has grown in the British Numismatic Society, so has the amount of information that is published in the British Numismatic Journal. The British Numismatic Journal now contains approximately 200 pages per publication (publication occurs once a year sometime in January) and contains information about a number of things.

The most current British Numismatic Journal, for example contained a number of articles, some notes, a few obituaries, reviews of new numismatic publications, and a register of single coin finds. The British Numismatic Journal also contains a list of the society's members (more than 600 at this time), and of all the transactions the society conducted the previous year.

The British Numismatic Journal is a free hardback publication to members of the British Numismatic Society, but is for sale to anyone for the amount of £11.00 for those living in the UK, £12.00 for those who live in Europe outside of the UK and £13.00 for the rest of the world, the cost does include shipping and handling.

For those individuals who are serious about coin collecting or numismatics, the British Numismatic Journal is an invaluable resource for learning about new finds, collectors, coin distributors and private collections for sale. For members of the British Numismatic Society, a newsletter is sent out twice a year with updated information, and furthermore, membership meetings are held ten times a year at the Warburg Institute in London. Members also have the benefit of having access to the Society's library.

The British Numismatic Society encourages membership worldwide and will send their British Numismatic Journal and other publications worldwide as well. The British Numismatic Journal is a valuable source of information no matter where you live in the world and can provide new contacts and resources to avid coin collectors anywhere.
